Overview
In the 1970s East San Jose was rural. The 101st community college opened on September 3, 1975 to much fanfare. The two-lane country road, San Felipe Road backed up. Over 2700 day students were expected with another 3000 night students. City leaders bickered on how to widen it. It would be another decade before Highway 101 connected all the way to Yerba Buena Road. Route 71 took students to campus for $10 a month. But San Jose had its second community college, on a former vineyard, on a site once proposed to be a UC campus and which even earlier in the early 1900s flew the first gliders on Montgomery Hill.
