Keynote: Trading Traditions: California’s New Cultural Mix.
Photographers Shavelson and Setterberg trained their lens on the dynamic, multifarious, and paradoxical ethnic hybrids being created in the Bay Area, one of the most diverse populations in the country. Their 72-photo and music presentation includes images of youngMexican immigrants embracing Islam,Asian American Jazz musicians reinterpreting Duke Ellington with Chinese instruments and a Filipina dressed up as the Hindu Goddess Lakshmi.

The Mathematics of Love: Stage Reading
Award-winning Chicana writer, playwright and educator Cherrie Moraga directs professional actors in a stage reading of her new work. The play spans five centuries of indigenous memory and geography from Pre-Columbian Mexico City to Mission-era California to contemporary Los Angeles through the perspective of the main character, who is in mid-stage Alzheimer’s. A Stanford professor, Moraga is the recipient of a Rockefeller Fellowship for Literature, a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, and two Fund for New American Plays Awards.

The Blood of Flowers: Author Reading
Anita Amirrezvani’s story about the place of women in Islamic society in 17th century Iran has been sold to publishers in more than 30 countries and was longlisted for the 2008 Orange Prize for Fiction in the UK. Part historical fiction and part feminist treatise, Amirrezvani’s novel was hailed by the Washington Post as “enduring and dynamic” while Publisher’s Weekly raved about its “sumptuous imagery and a modern sensibility.” Amirrezvani wrote the book while she was an arts writer and dance critic at the San Jose Mercury News.

The East-West Connection: Art Presentation

For the first half hour, the South Bay Guitar Society (SBGS) accompanies international virtuoso Steve Lin, winner of the 2006 Boston GuitarFest Competition and producer of two albums. Lin combines latin, Chinese, Italian and other musical influences with uncommon elegance and confidence. The SBGS is followed by the San Jose Symphonic Choir, one of the premier volunteer choral societies in California, performing classical and contemporary choral music, including Ave Verum and Old Irish Blessing under the musical direction of Dr. Don D'Angelo. Appeals to audiences of all ages and backgrounds.

Djerassi Resident Artists Program Panel Discussion.
Artist residencies provide dancers, artists, writers and photographers uninterrupted time for work, reflection, and collegial interaction. Sculptor Osvaldo Ruiz, Media Artist Nora Raggio, and Choreographer Debby Kajiyama will discuss what the eminent Djerassi program helped them accomplish, how to apply for residencies, and how to make a living as an artist. A short film about the program will precede the panel discussion moderated by Executive Director Dennis O’Leary.

We Should Never Meet: Author Reading
Aimee Phan reads from her book of stories, which won the 2004 Association of Asian American Studies Book Award and a Finalist for the 2005 Asian American Literary Awards in Fiction, Phan writes about Operation Babylift, the emergency evacuation of 2,000 Vietnamese and Amerasian children from Saigon during the last days of the Vietnam war. Publisher’s Weekly praised her book as “A graceful, spare debut... a wrenching, poignant collection laced with pity and horror.”

World Dance Performance
Formed in April 2007, Duniya Dance and Drum Company combines dance and music from Punjab, India, and Guinea, West Africa. The word “duniya” means “world” in a wide array of languages, including Punjabi, Arabic, Susu and Wolof. Duniya will perform pieces that embody world dance and drum styles, with themes such as colonization, globalization, immigration, art, dance, music and love. Recommended for high school and middle school audiences.

Pamela Z Sound Workshop.
San Francisco-based composer/performer and audio artist Pamela Z, who performs around the world using voice, live electronic processing, and sampling technology, creates a composition with EVC students in this Wednesday workshop and performs it, along with her other pieces, during the ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday, September 24. She combines operatic bel canto and experimental vocal techniques with found percussion objects, spoken word, and sampled concrete sounds.

Pacific Art Collective, a group of 200 Bay Area artists, hip hop dancers and alternative musicians, engage students in creating art, music and dance. This high-energy participatory event will have students and artists creating “disposable” wall murals, aka graffiti!

Thao Nguyen Concert @ EVC Amphitheater
Opening for Thao Nguyen is Las Bomberas de la Bahia, a high-energy Afro/Puerto Rican women’s group of drummers, singers, and dancers. NPR calls the upbeat songs of Thao Nguyen and her Get Down Stay Down band “raw and infectious; her voice has a distinctive swagger, and she's a remarkably nimble guitarist.” Raised in Virginia by a single mother, Nguyen wrote her Indie-pop songs while working at her mother’s laundromat. Now she performs nationally, and her style is often compared to Lilith Fair and Lucinda Williams.

Indo-American dance company Payal performs a series of individual dances entitled Nritya Tarang. The intricate rhythms, dynamic footwork and exquisite poses reflect the power, beauty, joy and the grace of Indian classical and folk styles, Indian contemporary and the Fusion style dance movements. Artistic Director Susmita Bhatacharya, a Gold Medalist in Indian Classical Dance, has has been performing, choreographing, teaching and directing shows for more than 20 years in India, USA and Canada. Payal performs throughout the Bay Area. This piece will be performed by some of the most talented Indian Dancers in the Bay Area who have been learning and performing dances for many years. Families from all cultures are welcome!

Contemporary Dance
Dance Theatre International founder and Artistic Director Maggie Parungao-Ferla presents outstanding contemporary dances featuring a culturally diverse group of male and female professionals from the Bay Area. Born in the Philippines, Ferla has danced with the San Francisco Ballet, Bejart Ballet in Switzerland and the Hamburg Ballet in Germany. She has worked with internationally acclaimed choreographers such as Maurice Bejart, John Neumier, Helgi Tomasson, William Forsythe, David Bintley, and Mats Ek, performing in world premiere pieces. Manuel Romero Concert
Singing sensation Manuel Romero performs a wide range of musical styles, from mariachi and ballads in Spanish to classical Ave Maria and as well as contemporary songs in English. Romero sang for Pope John Paul II in Mexico, performed at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas, ranked in the TOP 20 in the NBC series “America’s Got Talent,” and collaborated with the Silicon Valley Symphony and Diablo Symphony Orchestra. He’s performed in Mariachi Festivals throughout the country as well as on Despierta America and Furia Musical.
