Evergreen Valley College, San Jose City College Accreditation Fully Reaffirmed

(San Jose, Calif.) — The San José – Evergreen Community College District (SJECCD) learned this week that both of its Colleges, Evergreen Valley College (EVC) and San José City College (SJCC), received reaffirmation of their accreditation status until 2023 by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC).

The reaffirmed accreditation comes after ACCJC reviewed follow-up reports and evidentiary materials submitted in March 2018 after ACCJC accreditation site visits to both colleges in October 2016.

In letters to College presidents Keith Aytch and Dr. Byron D. Clift Breland of Evergreen Valley and San José City Colleges, respectively, ACCJC President Richard Winn expressed his appreciation to both presidents "for the diligent work and thoughtful reflection" both Colleges took in preparing their accreditation reports and materials.

"ACCJC accreditation is a hallmark of excellence and we are grateful for ACCJC's work in ensuring that we continue to meet their high standards for institutional effectiveness," said Dr. Deborah Budd, SJECCD chancellor. "The fact that both Colleges have had their accreditation fully reaffirmed reflects the hard work taking place on our campuses, our commitment to continuous improvement, and the dedication of our faculty and staff to serving students."

"Our accreditation is critical to ensuring that our students and the public are aware that we provide engaging, high-quality curriculum and student support services and it indicates to employers that we produce graduates who are emerging from programs that meet the very high standards set by ACCJC," said President Aytch. "The fact that the evaluation process is peer-led confirms that community college educators and administrators from throughout the region have recognized the value of a degree or certificate from EVC."

While the accreditation process was time consuming and required many resources at both Colleges, President Clift Breland indicated that it was very much a team effort that involved all constituency groups at the College. "It takes a great deal of commitment and determination to earn and maintain ACCJC accreditation. This is a milestone in San José City College's history and I am proud of our faculty, staff, and students for their efforts in making SJCC a great institution of higher learning," Dr. Clift Breland said. "It's important that we always work to improve upon and adapt the programs and services of the College to meet the needs of today's learners as well as the education and job training requirements of the new economy."

Prior to the Colleges' next comprehensive review in fall of 2023, the institutions will provide midterm reports in October 2020.
