What is a Communication Disability?
California Community College's Title V regulations define a communication disability as an impairment in the processes of speech, language or hearing.
- Hearing impairment means a total or partial loss of hearing function which impedes the communication process essential to language, educational, social and/or cultural interactions.
- Speech and language impairments mean one or more speech and language disorders of voice, articulation, rhythm and/or the receptive and expressive processes of language that limits the quality, accuracy, intelligibility or fluency of producing the sounds that comprise spoken language.
What classes are offered for Communication Disabilities?
The Disabilities Support Program (DSP) at Evergreen Valley College offers a class, Guidance 110, Speech and Language Skills, designed for those students with a communication disability. The class includes assessment and remediation of a communication disability. Support services such as basic skills classes, computer assisted instruction, interpreters, real time closed captioning, test taking accommodations, note-taking, and priority registration are provided to those students who are eligible under the Title V guidelines.
What are the Enrollment Procedures?
To enroll in Guidance 110, an appointment should be made with the counselor in the Disabilities Support Program (DSP). The DSP is located in the Student Services Building, room SC-120, and the telephone number is (408) 270-6447 Voice or (408) 238-8722 TDD. To discuss a communication disability, the speech-language specialist may be contacted at the same location and telephone number.
