ESL 330L—ESL Skills Development Lab

Course Outline/Catalog Description

The content of this lab will facilitate skills development for the ESL 330 series.  It is designed to supplement classroom instruction (in the ESL 330 series) by providing students the opportunity to work on an individualized basis with materials previously assigned by the ESL professor.  Students utilize video cassette and audio cassette tapes, workbooks, and other supplementary materials to develop and improve their skills in listening comprehension, oral production, reading, writing, and vocabulary development.  Students must enroll concurrently in ESL 332, 333, or 334.  Students may earn a maximum of 2 units.

Course Objectives

  1. To allow students to hear better as they listen and with video cassettes hear voices of several native speakers via recorded tapes and to their own voices through the headphones
  2. To provide a place in which all students can practice simultaneously in relative isolation from the other students
  3. When possible to allow the ESL professor to listen to individual responses and to work with individual students without interrupting the practice of the others
  4. To allow students to see aspects of American life and culture via recorded video cassettes
  5. To allow students to work on an individualized basis on materials developed and assigned by the ESL professor which supplement classroom activity, i.e., television programs, simulated "real life" situations, etc.

Course Content

Content will vary as materials selected for the ESL 330 series classes change.  The content, however, will at all times reflect current theory and methodology in the field of language learning and second language acquisition.  In general, the materials should contain some of the following features:  situational, functional/notional approaches, dictations, videotapes related to American life, exercises in listening comprehension, discourse analysis, pre-recorded materials usually related to the main tests selected for the ESL 330 series classes, and additional professor-prepared materials to supplement classroom activities and learning.

Methods of Evaluation and Examinations

  1. Assessment of academic achievement through tests and other written materials.
  2. Record of attendance.
  3. Individual assessment by the ESL professor.
