Evergreen Valley College Library Among Top 10 Cool College Landmarks
March 26, 2008, San Jose, CA – Writer Andrea Fernandez of eZine Mental Floss says, “Each college needs something to make them stand out, whether it’s a famous grad, a spook legend, or an awesome architectural wonder.” After scouring the country, and indeed, the world, for cool college buildings, Fernandez picked 10 landmarks that “just might inspire you to go back to college,” and EVC’s spectacular Library, designed by Steinberg Architects, was among them.
Evergreen Valley College’s library received an Honor Award from the Santa Clara Valley chapter of AIA, American Institute of Architects. Dramatic wooden structures, designed to look like branches, support the elevated ceiling, and the floor-to-ceiling windows allow ample natural light for reading, studying and gazing at the college’s beautiful grounds. The library also houses an educational technology center.
Dr. David Wain Coon, President of EVC, says, “The design goal was to create an inviting space for the broad multicultural audience our college serves. The library not only hosts our diverse student population but a range of community and campus groups.” Display space throughout the Library is used to exhibit artwork and cultural icons to enrich the campus community. A separate Heritage Room provides space for storage of local history collections, research and small group discussions.

The Memorial Church at Stanford University, MIT’s Stata Center and the School of Drama at Victorian College of Arts in Melbourne, Australia, also made the list.
