Safety Rules
- All employees will comply with the San Jose / Evergreen Community College District Code of Safe Practices and all Safety and Health Regulations listed in the Injury and Illness Prevention Program.
- Supervisors are responsible to verify that subordinates have received adequate safety training and appropriate safety procedures are followed.
- All employees will be given accident prevention instructions initially and when there is a change in the operation which involves additional safety training.
- Horseplay, scuffling and other acts that tend to have an adverse influence on the safety or well-being of the employees are prohibited.
- Work will be well-planned and supervised to prevent injuries in the handling of materials, equipment, and machinery.
- No one will knowingly be permitted or required to work while their ability or alertness is so impaired by fatigue, illness or other causes that it might unnecessarily expose themselves or others to injury.
- Employees will ensure that all safety guards and other protective devices are in place and adjusted. Employees will promptly report any deficiencies to their supervisor.
- Employees will not modify or tamper with any power / gas equipment, machinery, air or water lines in a manner not within the scope of their duties, unless they have received instructions from their supervisor.
- All injuries will be reported promptly to the supervisor so that arrangements can be made for medical or first aid treatment. Remember to fill out the "Employee's Claim for Workers' Compensation Benefits" form to start the claim process.
- The supervisor will fill out the "Supervisor's Report of Employee Injury" when any on the job injury occurs that requires medical treatment.
- Observe good housekeeping rules. Keep all areas clean and orderly. Keep aisles, passageways, and stairs clear of all obstructions.
- Employees will receive information preventing problems associated with Video Display Terminal (Computer) use.
- When lifting heavy objects, use the large muscles of the legs instead of the smaller muscles of the back. Avoid twisting your body while lifting and get help if the load is heavy or awkward.
- Employees will cleanse thoroughly after handling hazardous substances, and follow the manufacturer's instructions for the safe usage, storage, and disposal of all chemical products.
- All chemical containers must include a label identifying the contents. Labels on secondary containers (i.e., spray bottles) must include the name of the product, the manufacturer's name, address, and phone number, the instructions for safe use of the product, and the first aid procedures to be followed in case of accidental exposure.
- Material Safety Data Sheets for all chemical products will be maintained at each worksite and will be assessible to all employees.
- Do not expose yourself to a known hazard without obtaining the necessary safety equipment and isntruction needed to perform that job safely.
- Use all appropriate and required safety equipment.
- In the event of a fire, sound the alarm.
- Upon hearing the alarm, stop work and proceed to the nearest clear exit. Gather at the appointed location.
- Only trained and designated workers may attempt to respond to a fire or other emergency. Employees may not use a fire extinguisher without prior training.
- Means of egress shall be kept unblocked, well lighted and unlocked during work hours.
- Care should be exercised in closing file drawers to avoid pinching the employee's or coworker's fingers.
- File cabinet drawers shall be opened one at a time and closed when work is finished.
- All employees will avoid remarks, behavior, or threats which intimidate, harass or degrade others.
- Employees are encouraged to immediately report any unsafe condition or hazard that they discover in the workplace to their supervisor or to the appropriate department.
- Keep flammable items away from funaces or light fixtures.
- Keep all items which may injure children out of reach or secured (e.i., chemicals, hot water)
- Always wash your hands after using chemicals or restroom visits.
- Doors opening into hallways will be opened slowly to ensure safety of students passing by.
- Persons walking in hallways will be alert to doors opening into hallway.
No employee will be disciplined or discharged for reporting any workplace hazard or unsafe condition.
