California Articulation Number system (CAN)

Campus Tour | High School Students | Transfer Students | Frequently Asked Questions

CAN provides a cross-reference number for courses which have been evaluated by faculty and determined to be acceptable "in lieu of" each other. Only lower-division, transferable, introductory courses commonly targeted on two or four-year college and university campuses are included in the system.

The California Articulation Number System is not a common numbering system. Each campus retains its own course numbers, prefixes, and titles. The CAN number, (e.g. CAN Eng. 12), is listed parenthetically in the catalog description and other publications as appropriate. Participating campuses cross-reference their courses with a CAN number as illustrated in the following:

Example: Intro. British Literature

Example: Intro. British Literature Campus A: Eng. 4 (CAN Eng. 8)

Campus B. Eng. 110 (CAN Eng. 8)

Campus C: Lit. 21A (CAN Eng. 8)

As in the above example, the names of the departments offering the courses may vary from campus to campus. However, since the courses are identified with an identical California Articulation Number, the courses are accepted in lieu of each other at two and four-year colleges participating the system.

Further information on what the California Articulation Number System can do for you, and updated CAN lists may be found in the Transfer/Career/Work Experience Center at Evergreen Valley College.
