Evergreen Valley College wants you to be in charge of your educational planning future. This workbook will provide you with the necessary planning information to make the best decisions about your education. This workbook will help you begin a student educational plan for transfer. This workbook will also help you establish your educational goals.

Developing Your Educational Plan:

You will need to decide if you are certain of your educational goal, exploring for your goal, or are you totally undecided about your goal?

Are you certain?

Educational planning is a straightforward task if you have decided on an academic goal for yourself, then which college or university you want to attend. For each goal (major), and for each college/university, there are specific planning paths. Simply meet with a counselor prior to planning your second semester classes, identify the classes required (ASSIST.org), and create an educational plan for the next several semesters, including General Education requirements, as well as, prep courses for your chosen goal (major) for each college/university. Then follow that plan to completion. You can touch base with your counselor to keep up to date on requirements and you can feel certain that you are on a direct path.

Are you exploring?

Most freshman students are not "certain" of their goals (major) or transfer institution. Therefore you are exploring classes that you were not offered in high school. For you, the planning task will be much more complex but still do-able. If you are exploring you will need a two-track strategy. First, you should take "generic" general education courses and build your academic and study skills. Nearly all colleges and universities require between 20 and 39 lower division general educational units. They include language skills, mathematics, life sciences, physical sciences, social sciences, and the arts and humanities. There are a series of classes that are common to nearly all general education patterns. This workbook will help you select some of these classes.

Second, your general education courses will allow you time to:

This exploration takes between two and three full semesters to complete. After that time, you hopefully have decided what your educational goal (major) and transfer institution will be. You need to become "certain" by the early part of your third semester. Otherwise, you may begin to select courses that are not required for your major!

Are you undecided?

The educational planning process will be longer and less certain for students who are completely undecided about their academic plans. A recommended first-semester strategy might include visiting the Transfer/Career/Work Experience Center; major workshops; building your English, math and study skills; enrolling in a personal growth class; sampling general education classes and possible major courses; interviewing with a career counselor on campus; interviewing with a person in your future job or field.
