Units, Not Time

Your progress in elementary school was probably a matter of time. Each year, you moved up one grade. The same was probably true for you in junior high and high school. The vast majority of students take the same time to get through the twelve grades of school.

There is a tremendous difference among students in the amount of time it takes to reach a particular goal in college. College progress is not measured in TIME. College progress is measured in UNITS.

What is a Unit?

A semester unit in a lecture class can be generally described as one hour per week per semester (18 weeks). The most common EVC class is a 3-unit lecture class and meets three hours per week for one semester.

Evergreen Valley College classes vary from 0.5 units to 5.0 units.

How many units in a transfer program?

It varies. Programs involve different levels of preparation. Your transfer program could involve any of these levels:

Certification of UC or CSU

This requires a minimum of 60 semester units for UC and 56 for CSU lower division preparation for major.

B.A. or B.S. or other Bachelor's Degree

This is a university or four-year college degree. This is what is most often referred to as a "college degree." This commonly requires 124 to 136 semester units and includes all transferable units from Evergreen Valley College.

M.A., M. S., M.B.A, or other Master's Degree

This is the first level beyond the Bachelor's degree. It is commonly 30 to 60 semester units beyond the Bachelor's.

PhD, Ed.D, M.D., or other Doctorate Degree

This is the highest level of academic or professional degrees.
