Student Equity Committee

Overview

The Student Equity and Achievement (SEA) Program merges funding for three initiatives: the Student Success and Support Program; the Basic Skills Initiative; and Student Equity. The SEA Program is an attempt to make it easier for institutions to fund the programs that these initiatives were trying to encourage. Integrating these efforts into a single SEA Program will help colleges close the achievement gaps for students from traditionally underrepresented populations.

Equity plans are designed to increase achievement by targeting specific indicators (access; retention; attained the vision goal completion; transferred to a four-year institution; and completed both transfer-level math and English) and gauging their success. Colleges are required to create establish goals and implement strategies to address disparities discovered.

To align with the SEA Program, Evergreen Valley College's Student Equity Committee has been established and meets regularly to:

  1. Review College plans through an equity and inclusion lens and research best practices, and innovative methods for cultivating an equitable and inclusive campus environment.
  2. Educate, promote and inform the college community on equity, diversity, and inclusion issues.
  3. Establish a funding request process for SEA funds.
  4. Collaborate with other college committees and offices to support institutional plans with regard to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
  5. Discuss and respond to data with regard to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
  6. Presents annual reports to the campus community and District on the progress the institution is making in achieving goals.

Executive Summary For 2019-2022 Student Equity Plan

With equity, opportunity and social justice as our guiding principles, Evergreen Valley College's (EVC) mission is to empower and prepare students from diverse backgrounds to succeed academically and to be civically responsible global citizens. The mission statement provides the foundation for each student's experience as he or she progresses to transfer status, gains occupational and basic skills programs. EVC empowers and supports all students to accomplish their educational, career and personal goals by offering a variety of academic and student support services based on our college's guiding principles.

EVC recognizes that it has an institutional responsibility to identify barriers to student success. This responsibility inspires the College to address the barriers by intentionally developing activities that help students succeed. EVC's Student Equity Plan outlines activities that target the distinct needs of Disproportionately Impacted (DI) populations by using data provided by the Office of Research, Planning and Institutional Effectiveness. EVC strives to provide academic and student support services to close the gaps in student achievement.

According to Title 5, Disproportionate Impact is defined as a particular disaggregated group being underrepresented or underperforming based upon their expected presence in the population. Indicators of success are broken down into five metrics: Access; Retention; Certificates & Degrees; Transferred to a Four-Year Institution; and Completed Both Transfer-Level Math and English. EVC's Student Equity Plan identifies activities for each metric. The activities are designed to close the equity gap in three years.

The Student Success Advisory Committee (SSAC) primarily drove the dialogue and planning for the SE Plan with input from several categorical and academic support programs that provide direct services to disproportionately impacted populations. As a shared governance committee, it has representation from all constituent groups. The SSAC committee, and the newly established Student Equity Programs Workgroup, were the drivers of student equity planning. This work group consists of faculty and staff who direct categorical programs and academic support programs.
