Materialist: A love letter to fabric, form and the layered beauty of Black womanhood
Materialistic reclaims a word often used dismissively and transforms it into an exploration of reverence and intention. In this exhibition, fabric is not an accessory but a central character—wrapped, layered, and embedded into painted portraits of Black women. Ankara and batik introduce pattern, movement, and cultural lineage, expanding the artist’s practice beyond paint alone. Through this fusion of textile and portraiture, the work challenges narrow definitions of value, beauty, and materiality, celebrating obsession as a form of care and creation.
